Agricultural Programs

Conservation Farming: Our farmers at the Grace Center have done a wonderful job of preparing the land and putting in two large vegetable gardens. At the project we use a method of conservation farming which makes use of composting and green manures in addition to chemical supplements.  Our goal over the next few years is to build up the quality of soil and the use of composts and manures until we can produce an organic crop.

On the farm, we are developing a system of rotation for the vegetables to ensure the children will have fresh produce to eat year round.

Water Catchment: Two small water catchments have been built to store water for use during the dry season. Our goal is to develop a large enough reservoir that it can sustain fish.

Training Programs: The district agricultural agent has selected our training farm as a demonstration farm for the entire district. They will be holding classes and teaching local farmers using our property.

As a part of the training program, we provide farm starter packs for destitute families in the local community.  These packs provide seed for corn and for green manure.  They also include chemical fertilizers to supplement the growth of the crop.  A farm starter pack will produce enough food for a family of four for one year.

AGRICULTURE PROGRAM NEEDS:

  • Organic Farmers:  We would love to pick your brains and have you on our list of experts.  Please contact Karen@cohcommunity.org if you are an organic farming expert and would be willing to help us get our organic farm into the ground!
  • Financial Support:  Malawians are fantastic farmers!  But to get our programs running up to speed, it will take a little help from you.
    • Buy a Farm Starter Pack:  You can provide food for a family of four for an entire year with just $50!  We love this partnering method of providing food for a family.  You provide the seed, they plant the fields.  It is a beautiful way to maintain the dignity of our Malawian friends and still help out with a terrible need.
    • Support one of our farmers.  Our farmers receive a salary of $40 a month.  Your monthly gift can provide employment, support a family and provide food for the chlidren’s program.  You can’t beat that!
